On Thursday, in a statement, the Ministry of Textiles said that India has now become the world’s second-largest manufacturer of personal protective equipment (PPE) in a short period of two months. The PPE kits manufacturing in India started within two months of the coronavirus outbreak. Earlier, all PPE kits were being imported. The ministry is taking several steps to ensure both the quality and quantity of the PPE kits and only certified manufacturers across the entire supply chain are allowed to supply PPEs to governments. China is still remains the world’s prime producer of PPE body coveralls.

“The large availability of the testing kit is boon for the nation during the crisis. With the acquisition of this equipment and with the substantial plan to add more equipment as per the requirement, we will be able to tackle the crisis not only the quantitative but also qualitative requirements involved in the testing of body coveralls,” said Ajit Chavan, Secretary, Textiles Committee and Additional Textile Commissioner, Ministry of Textiles.

The Textiles Committee is a statutory body and is under the administrative control of the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. Its main role was to ensure the quality of textiles and textile machinery both for internal consumption and export purpose.
