A new disinfection unit named Ultra Swachh has been developed by Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) to disinfect a wide range of materials, including Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs), electronics items, fabrics and others. Institute of Nuclear Medicine & Allied Sciences (INMAS), the Delhi based laboratory of DRDO has developed this product with industry partner M/s Gel Craft Healthcare Private Limited. Using Ozonated Space Technology for disinfection, the system uses an advanced oxidative process comprising of multiple barrier disruption approaches, said DRDO in a press release.

According to the release, Ultra Swachh is a dual-layered system with specialized ozone sealant technology assuring trapping of ozone for the necessary disinfection cycle. It comes in two variants namely Ozonated Space and Trinetra Technology. Trinetra technology combines ozonated space and radical dispenser technologies. Ultra Swachh is equipped with various safety features such as emergency shutdown, door interlocks, dual door, delay cycle, and leak monitors to ensure safe operations for a longer duration.

The primary use of disinfectants is to eliminate or greatly reduce microbial pathogens and thus prevent transmission of disease and illness. Several versions of the tunnels are already up and running at various places in the country. WHO had warned in the past that tunnels are meant to supplement and not to replace other measures like washing hands regularly, maintaining proper hygiene, wearing a mask, and maintaining social distancing.
