Amid the coronavirus pandemic, the National Institute of Transforming India (NITI) Aayog launched a campaign ‘Surakshit Dada-Dadi, Nana-Nani Abhiyan’. It is a collaborative effort between NITI Aayog, Piramal Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Piramal Group, and 25 Aspirational Districts to ensure the well-being of 2.9 million Senior Citizens during the COVID-19 pandemic. NITI Aayog has launched this campaign following the appeal by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take care of senior citizens. Surendranagar district in Gujarat, is one of the 25 aspirational districts of the country, which is implementing this scheme very successfully.

”Surakshit Dada-Dadi & Nana-Nani Abhiyan” is aimed at creating awareness about various aspects of senior citizens” health and lifestyle including preventive measures and requisite behavioural changes in view of COVID-19 pandemic.

The Campaign follows three approaches-

  1. Prevent- Supporting senior citizens through Behaviour Change
  2. Access- Delivery of Essential Services
  3. Detect- Early Tracking of COVID-19 Symptoms

“Representatives from NITI, Piramal & 800+ volunteers from 25 Aspirational Districts were part of today’s virtual launch,” the Niti Aayog stated in a statement. The statement further mentioned that more than 150 volunteers are engaged in this campaign and are contacting about 25000 senior citizens of the district through phone calls by taking contact details from the district administration. They inquired about the health of old persons and gave them information on Coronavirus. They also helped them to fulfil their essential requirements like medicines, ration or work related to ration cards. Surendranagar district administration with the help of volunteers has already contacted more than 5 thousand senior citizens. They provided all required help to 850 such old age persons.
